Don Treacy Award

Ulmstead began its swim tam in the Magothy River, where a few brave children would swim from the dock to a raft out in the river. Make-shift lanes were made from rope tied between the dock and the raft.

When the safety of the swimmers became an issue. 75 families made a tremendous financial commitment to build a pool. When this task was accomplished, the Pool Board asked Marilyn Blandford to organize a swim team.  With no extra funds available, Marilyn was concerned with how this might be accomplished. The topic arose at a neighborhood party one evening. A newcomer, Don Treacy, volunteered to coach a team. Thus began the Ulmstead Swim Team as we know it.

To honor Don for his volunteer services, Marilyn originated the Don Treacy Award. This trophy has been presented each year since 1972 to a swimmer who exhibits certain qualities.  These qualities are: dedication, sportsmanship, team leadership, spirit, cooperation, determination, and the desire to excel.
